Liverpool v Manchester United Betting Preview
Written By Harvey T  | 11th October

It's always a grand occasion when these two sides meet and this weekend at Anfield will be no different. The first Premier League game after the international break promises to be a huge one as Jose Mourinho takes his side to Anfield to face their bitter rivals. United have made an impressive start to the new season but Liverpool away will represent by far their biggest test to date. Our preview looks at where the best bets are in the meeting between these two North West giants!

Bookies struggling to separate

There's very little difference in price between these two though one would suspect that if this game was at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho's men would be the favourites. It's United who come in to this game in better vein of form, having won their last six games in all competitions and sit level on points at the top of the Premier League table. The fact that game is at Anfield somewhat negates United's form advantage and Liverpool have generally fared well in the big games under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool sit seventh in the table and seven points behind their opponents having drawn 1-1 away to Newcastle last time out. It's been a patchy start to the new season for the Reds, having hammered Arsenal 4-0 at home only to be on the receiving end of a 5-0 thumping at the hands of Manchester City in their very next game. Klopp will have his side right up for this game however so expect a raised level of performance from Liverpool in comparison to some of their other recent outings.

The Key Factors

Sadio Mane suffered a hamstring injury whilst on international duty for Senegal and in a major blow to Liverpool, the forward will be out for up to six weeks. Klopp has other options in attack and could still field the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah so they still look strong going forward. It's at the other end of the pitch however where their issues really lie and their shaky defence. In order to win this game, the likelyhood is that Liverpool are going to have to outscore United given their fragilities at the back. None of Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip or Ragnar Klavan particularly inspire you with confidence in the task of coming up against Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and co. However Liverpool could benefit from United's injury problems of their own in midfield. With no Paul Pogba or Marouane Fellaini, who has done well against Liverpool in the past, it's likely Mourinho will field both Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic at the base of their midfield. That duo however look well suited to playing in this kind of away game and will provide a solid platform for United's attacking talents.

United's big test

It's been a great start to the new season for Manchester United but make no mistake, this is by far their biggest test to date. The only Premier League game they have failed to win so far came away to Stoke, where their own defence hardly looked particularly assured. If the pacey Liverpool attack can isolate the United centre-backs, they can definitely cause them problems. However is Jose Mourinho likely to allow that to happen in a game of this magnitude?

MonsterBet's Prediction & Betting Tips

It's really tough to call how this one is going to pan out. Yes United come in to the game in better form but after the international break, will they still have momentum on their side? And will they be able to cope with what is by far their hardest game of the season so far? Looking at the best bets here, we like both teams to score in the context of the attacking talent on show. Mourinho will not play as defence minded as he did last season here whilst Liverpool know they cannot depend on their backline so will have to get something going forward.

In opting for both teams to score, it opens up the possibility of the over 2.5 goals market which is again worth your consideration. If ultimately pushed, we can see United nicking this one, maybe by just the one goal so our prediction is Mourinho's men via a 2-1 scoreline.
