Chelsea v Manchester City Betting Preview

Manchester City have made a scintillating start to the new Premier League season but they face their first big task this weekend. Pep Guardiola's men travel to Stamford Bridge to take on last season's champions Chelsea in what is their first big test of the season so far. Chelsea meanwhile have recovered well from an opening day defeat to Burnley and sit only three points behind their opponents. It all makes for a really intriguing prospect as the two sides meet in the tea-time kick off this Saturday and our preview analyses both sides chances.

Conte's men look to make statement

In the early part of the season, all the talk has been about the two Manchester clubs. Chelsea meanwhile seemed to be dismissed after losing their first game of the season in a shock 3-2 defeat at home to Burnley. Since then however the Blues have gone about their business impressively, winning four games and drawing one, at home to Arsenal. Antonio Conte however can take great encouragement from the fact a similar thing happened last season when the two Mancunian clubs were seen as by far the strongest before Chelsea took complete hold of the league and ended up winning the title by amassing a huge 93 points.

Ahead of this game, things are looking positive for Eden Hazard to start with the Belgian having recently returned to fitness after breaking his ankle at the start of the summer. The Belgian's influence on this Chelsea side cannot be underestimated and they are a completely different proposition with him back in the offing. Conte will be hoping he can form a good relationship with Alvaro Morata, with the Spanish striker enjoying a fine start to his Chelsea career. He already has six Premier League goals to his name and took home the match ball with a hat-trick away to Stoke last time out. Whilst City have looked far more assured defensively so far this season, they have yet to come up against a side of Chelsea's credentials.

Are City the real deal?

With 21 goals scored and just two conceded thus far, City have been in magnificent form this campaign. They warmed up for this game with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Shakthar Donetsk in Europe whilst in their last three league games they've scored 16 goals without a response. Are we now starting to see the best of City under Pep Guardiola? Well this game will perhaps be the greatest indicator yet. To see how they fare when travelling to face one of their major title rivals away from home will demonstrate how much they have improved from last season. Guardiola's approach in this game is likely to see him want his side to dominate possession as per normal but the role of his full-backs will be key.

With Benjamin Mendy missing, Kyle Walker and whoever lines up on the left will be tasked with pushing Chelsea's own wing-backs back towards their own goal in an attempt to allow the likes of David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne to conduct the game from deep. The other big selection dilemma will be whether Pep opts to pick both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus up-front. The two have formed a potent partnership this season but can City afford to field them both from the start at Stamford Bridge? Though with David Luiz out through suspension for the Blues, could Guardiola be tempted to make a statement and test the Chelsea back line?

MonsterBet's Prediction & Betting Tips

There's hardly anything to chose between these sides in the eyes of the bookmakers. You can conceivably make strong cases for both teams winning this game but one thing we can see is goals. A Chelsea defence without David Luiz will find it hard work to shut out the City attack but in a similar vein, Chelsea will fancy their chances of catching their opponents out on the counter attack. Goals look a guarantee here so it's worth consiering exploring the over 2.5 goals market or perhaps the safer option of both teams to get on the scoresheet.
